Thomas Wintersperger (Ulrich Tukur) and his wife Sonja (Ursina Lardi) travel to a small village to say goodbye to their daughter Anna, tragically lost in an aviation accident nearby. To cope with his pain, Thomas spontaneously buys a run-down grocer's shop next to the scene of the accident and turns it into a pub. Sonja is unable to understand Thomas's decision to give up his prosperous company - and his previous life - and the couple initially goes in separate ways.

The spirited waitress Wiebke (Marie Schöneburg) introduces Thomas to the secrets of the eccentric villagers who start to frequent their pub. Over time, new friendships develop, short love affairs spring up and old stories are revived. Through all of this, Thomas manages to come to terms with his grief and become a vital link between the villagers.
